Appearance
Bright scarlet red, with a small and concentrated core.
Nose
Concentrated and rich with prunes, raspberries, red currants, and herbal characters - rosemary.
Palate
Light-medium body. Lighter-style, but plenty of fruit on the palate - plums, prunes and raspberries - with a good acid balance leaving a fresh mouth-feel. Some green pepper and herbal characters, with robust tannins. Slightly bitter on the finish with a slightly chemical aftertaste.
Overall
2004 was the first real vintage for Italian bodega director Alessandro Speri's Prodigo, and one would expect the winemakers to face some challenges as a result. However, despite the uncharacteristic appearance for the varietal, this un-oaked Malbec has an attractive and complex nose, and first impressions on the palate are good although the tannins might be too aggressive for some tastes. Unfortunately the finish is a minor disappointment, especially for a wine in this price bracket.
