Appearance
Scarlet red with violent hues.
Nose
Cherries, red currants and plums, with freshly milled sawdust and a touch of coffee.
Palate
Light to medium body. Fruit on the palate is true to the aroma. Tannins are quite woody but not aggressive. Good acid balance. Caramel, coffee and liquorice characters, matched by a spicy zing, also suggest liberal oaking.
Overall
This Malbec from El Galgo is worth a look, and not only because it is rather different in style to the standard Mendoza offering. There's plenty of fruit and oak flavours here, although it's not in the big, dense, concentrated jammy style where you might expect to find such complexity. Possibly a little uncompetitive on price.
