Gran Lurton Cabernet Sauvignon

2001

Valle de Uco, Mendoza

AR$60 (US$20)

Appearance

Clear, light ruby red.

Nose

Deep, concentrated jammy blackcurrants and blackberries. Caramel and candied fruits, a slight earthiness, and a river-stone minerality.

Palate

Light to medium-bodied. Dry and savoury, fruit-led but not as concentrated as the nose suggests. Varietal characteristics of blackcurrant and green capsicum. Oaky complexities include cinnamon and vanilla, caramel and mocha, as well as dry wood shavings.

Overall

A lighter and (dare we say it) more old-world style Cabernet Sauvignon from French bodega Lurton. The alcohol is, for Mendoza, astonishingly low at just 13%, and this reflects in the drier and less concentrated impression. With five years already under its belt, it is a fairly mellow and well-integrated mouthful, though the remaining wood edge suggests it has a few more years in it yet. In true old-world French style however, the varietal fruit characters will likely be playing second-fiddle to the oak and bottle age if cellared too much longer.
